Stem and Leaf Application


Vocabulary - Stem and Leaf Plot, Scatter Plot; S's will need to know how to use the Internet.
Procedures/Activities:
1.)Introduce new and relevant terms - U.S. State Capital, stem and leaf plot, and scatter plot.

2.)Model examples. Demonstrate how to plot data using a stem and leaf plot.

3.)Students will list the letters of the alphabet vertically on a sheet of paper/or excel spreadsheet. As students list the alphabet, the teacher will handout a class roster.

4.)Students will take each name and tally the letters as they appear. Students will cross out the letter as it is tallied.

5.)Students will count the number of tally marks for each letter next to the last tally mark for that letter.

6.)Students will create a stem and leaf plot for the letters tally from the names in the class roster.

7.)Students will pair up and compare stem and leaf plots.

8.)Independent work- Create a stem and leaf plot using the letters of each state capital. This map from Thinkfinity will help you identify all the U.S. State Capitals.

10.)Journal writing - List at least 2 other ways to display the data collected in the above assignment. (Moodle)

11.)Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the assignment. (wiki)
